The Mary Rutan Hospital Concussion Clinic began in August of 2013. Since that time, our Physical Therapists and Athletic Trainers have continued to stay on top of cutting edge research from the leading experts in the field. This type of research is often found through continuing education courses.
In February of 2017, physical therapists Kristy Wisner PT, DPT and Kristen Layman PT, DPT attended a Concussion Certification course offered through The American Institute of Balance in Florida. This 2-day program was designed to provide medical professionals with evaluation, assessment, and treatment of concussion. The course also discussed in the cognitive component of the treatment of concussion.
Additionally, in July of 2017, Kristy, Kristen and the Mary Rutan Hospital Athletic Trainers (Abby Gompers, Tiffany LeVan, Addy Passaro and Tray Sanderson) attended the First Annual Concussion Health Summit in Columbus, OH. This summit featured the leading concussion experts from a variety of medical fields to discuss the latest research and technology regarding concussion management. The summit integrated all aspects of concussion from baseline testing, to prevention, to treatment and finally post-injury examination.
Many advances have been made to the Mary Rutan Rehab Concussion Clinic because of the new research and knowledge gained through these courses. Our therapists have added several new testing procedures during the evaluation process. The results of the evaluation will guide the treatment of each patient based upon their specific needs.
Also, several new pieces of equipment have been purchased to assist in the treatment of concussion patients. The MRH Concussion clinic has made the commitment to the community that we serve to continue to learn and progress their evaluation and treatment processes as concussion research continues.
